Pencil Cup Teacher Gift

Kathleen's Pencil Cup gift for her son's teacher.
My friend Kathleen brought the supplies over for Funday today to make this cute pencil cup for her son's 4th grade teacher.  I can't take any credit for actually making this item, but since she doesn't blog her stuff, I can take credit for snapping the photos of this craft to share with you.  :-)

How To Make the Pencil Cup:

Supplies for decorating cup.
Supplies Used:
  • 2 boxes (20 each) yellow #2 pencils
  • wood letter initials
  • paint for letter initials
  • inexpensive pencil cup (this one came from Walmart)
  • ribbon to tie around center
  • glue gun
  • styrofoam ball, glass marbles (see UPDATE below)

Paint the letters and set aside to dry.

Use glue gun to glue pencils around the cup.

After all pencils are glued, mark a line at level where ribbon is desired.

Measure and cut ribbon.  Use glue gun to adhere ribbon to cup.
Pencil cup with pencils and ribbon added.
Glue the painted letters to ribbon.
Voila!

Dec. 19, 2012  UPDATE:   I was in my daughter's kindergarten classroom today where I noticed the original pencil cup that inspired Kathleen's cup.  I noticed that the pens and pencils stick out the top of the tall pencil cup.

The original inspiration.  Notice the pencils stick out the top?
I took an up-close look at it and saw that there was a sytrofoam ball and glass marbles added inside to elevate the bottom of the inside of the cup.   This way the pens and pencils don't get lost inside this tall cup.  How clever.
There is a styrofoam ball and glass marbles inside the up to elevate the bottom of it.
So, don't forget this final part to make this cup perfect!

All done!

Cute and useful gift for a teacher.
