Newly diagnosed :(

Wanted to share what is going on in my life.  I got a real shock late last week when the doctor told me I had cancer.  After I had a routine exam last month, my doctor had sent me back for a fine needle aspiration (biopsy) for a couple of nodules on my thyroid, just for "peace of mind".    Well, that didn't work quite the way it was planned!  My mind is more stressed and nervous than at peace right now.

I didn't know anything about this cancer before, but I'm now reading everything I can find on it.  Did you know that thyroid cancer is the fastest increasing cancer in both men and women in the US?  It is also the most common endocrine cancer.

Fortunately, thyroid cancer is a slow-growing cancer, and is treatable when found early.  That leads some people to say that it is the best cancer to have.  I don't think any cancer is good.  I don't want mine, that is for sure.  I wouldn't want anyone else to have it either.

I'm getting some more tests done, and then my doctor will be sending me to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD for surgery and treatment.  It's a hike from where we live and I'm not looking forward to what is required for treatment, but that's OK.  You do what you have to do.

I take comfort in knowing that it can be treated, but it weighs heavy on my mind.  I've got a family to raise and my life to live.  It just stinks that thyroid cancer has to be a part of it.

My thoughts exactly.

Hugs,
Sylvia

  2. Sylvia,
    Peace be still!
No weapon formed against you shall in anyway prosper!
Praise the Lord He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, and is Still in the Healing 'business'...He is greater than cancer.
I speak Life to your body!
And to the cancer, it must leave and never return to torment you or your loved ones.
The Lord desires for you to prosper in body, soul and spirit and He delights in giving you the desires of your heart.
May the Lord touch your thyroid restoring health to your body and may your medical teams stand in awe at the miraculous touch and healing.

  4. I had a node removed last year that turned out to be benign. I did tons of reading also. No cancer is good but this one very cureable. I was told I would have had a portion of my thyroid removed and just be watched closely. Do whatever the doctors recommend. You're going to one of the best hospitals in the country. You're young and will be fine. I'll say prayers. Please keep us updated. I'll be thinking of you.

  14. I'll be sending prayers your way! I had to have my thyroid removed. Surgery is never fun - kind of knocked me on my backside for about a week. "They" do say it's a better cancer to have - but still no good. You'll be on my mind!

  17. I found your blog on Sew Many Ways "find a friend friday", and I scrolled down to read this post. I wanted to let you know that my doctor found enlarged nodules on my thyroid and and after the fine need aspiration, found they were "pre-cancereous" and I had my entire thyroid surgically removed. The surgery was a piece of cake, but getting the medicine adjusted afterward takes time and patience. Contact me at anytime if you have any questions or concerns that you want to know from someone who has been through this diagnosis. God bless you and be with you during the time in your life. Warmest...

  20. Whoa! No - no one wants cancer. Just the word scares most of us. So sorry that that word and disease has to be part of your life. I cringe every year I have mammogram for fear that word might creep into my life.
God Bless and Hugs from Texas
